CLASS - Malacostraca
ROCK UNIT - Solenhofen Limestone
AGE - Upper Jurassic (150 million years old)
LOCALITY - Eichstatt Bay, Germany
The thin poorly mineralized shell of shrimp would not resist decay long enough to be preserved in most sedimentary rocks. The combination of quick burial, early hardening of the sediment, and isolation from oxygen and biological agents of decomposition, preserved many wondrous specimens in the Solenhofen Limestone, such as this shrimp with all of its delicate limbs.
