Phyllocarids are an ancient group of arthropods whose body resembles a spiked-tailed shrimp within partially opened clam shells. The specimen above represents only the "clam shell" part of the carapace. Phyllocarids are known from the Cambrian Period to the present and represent the oldest group of malacostracans (shrimp or crab-like animals).
