Lasiocrinus scoparius

CLASS - Crinoidea
ORDER - Disparida
FAMILY - Cyathocrinidae
GENUS/SPECIES - Lasiocrinus scoparius
ROCK UNIT - Coeymans Formation, Helderberg Group
AGE - Early Devonian (400 million years old)
LOCALITY - Jerusalem Hill, Herkimer Co., New York, USA
The delicate specimens were found in a shaley bed within the crinoid-rich
limestones of the Coeymans Formation. The billions of fragmented crinoid
stems and arms that make up most of the Coeymans Formation indicate shallow,
turbulent sea floor conditions. In such a setting, these specimens from
Jerusalem Hill must have been buried alive or immediately after death
to keep the skeletons intact.
