Camarocrinus ulrichi CLASS - Crinoidea ROCK UNIT - Haragan Group AGE - Devonian (400 million years old) LOCALITY - Pontotoc Co., Oklahoma, USA
Crinoids attached to the sea floor by many different methods. Some coiled their stems or attachment arms (cirri) around other stationery sea floor objects. Others used different styles of specialized anchoring structures or "holdfasts", including those resembling roots, grappling hooks and cemented discs. Like a prison "ball-and-chain," the thick, bulb-like mass retarded movement by its shear weight. The small circular attachment surface for the crinoid stem can be seen on the upper left surface of the bulb. PRI 42170 |
