Borings in clam shells

scale in cms

Many clams shells found on the beach show small, beveled holes near the beak (pointed portion of the shell near the hinge). These result from carnivorous snails that use tiny teeth to drill into the shell. The drills usually enter the muscles that hold the two shells together. This weakens the clam and the snail can get inside for an easy meal.
