The destruction of oyster shells may result in beachcombing confusion.
Strong waves can break up the largest oyster shells. The thick hinge portion of oysters often remain unbroken and may round in the surf. The product of oyster shell breakage and wear are small v-shaped shell fragments that are easy to mistake for shark teeth (above, right). They lack the shiny enamel that fresh fossil shark teeth possess.
