Edible oysters have a very irregular shell shape which results from tight packing with other oysters. As seen above, oysters cement to each other for stability. As a result massive build-ups of shells are found in many protected near-shore areas. Edible oysters lack the pearly inner lining of the pearl oysters. Many fossil oysters are mixed in with the modern shells.
