Modern oyster shells are either white, blue-gray or brown, with a porcelain white interior and a purple muscle scar. Ice Age deposits that yield fossil bones also contain oyster shells. these oysters look just like modern relatives, except the shells are black (inside and out).
On first glance it is easy to mistake black shell material for the fossil bones and teeth. Some fragments of modern and ancient oysters look just like shark teeth.
