Text Box: Welcome to Maryland Summer Center for Paleontology. Here we learned a lot more than you normally would at any camp. For the past two weeks we have learned a variety of things on the subject of paleontology; focusing on the Miocene epoch in Maryland. We have learned about Predator Prey Relationships, types of fossils that can be found from the Miocene, how to find and identify fossils, met many significant specialists and professionals in the field of Paleontology, and also how to work as a team. Here is a site were we posted our thoughts and feelings about this summer center

Text Box: During the center we met many scientists. They helped us to understand and expand our knowledge of Paleontology. Dr. Stephen Godfrey, the curator of Paleontology at the Calvert Marine Museum, gave demonstrations on how moon snails drill holes into bivalves and told us how fossils are created. He gave us an overview of the Miocene and taught us about what lived there and how they might have survived and died out. He dedicated a lot of his time to helping the summer center.

Text Box: Another great volunteer is Dr. Patricia Kelley, a professor at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington. She taught us about escalation and the moon snail project. Dr. Kelley is one of the creators of the project and has influenced much of this center

Text Box: We also give a special thanks to Ms. Pat Fink. She taught about matrices, what they are, what is in them and why it’s there. She walked us through the process of removing and cleaning shells from the matrices.

Text Box: Lastly, Mr. Jimmy Langley, Curator of Exhibits. He isn’t a scientist but he did help us. He showed us the museum and its layout and how he got to it. He helped us figure out how our exhibit should look for the museum and gave us helpful hints and tips. ( NOT PICTURED)
