Fossil Mollusks

The fossil shell beds at Sarasota contain more than 350 species of mollusks. The Pinecrest Sand as a whole contains approximately 1,000 species of mollusks. Many of these shells show excellent preservation. Many of these species closely resemble mollusks that live off the coast of Florida today. In fact, however, more than half of the Pinecrest mollusks are extinct.
