Many people may be surprised to find out that oil or natural gas has been produced in 37 of the 50 United States, and discovered in even more! But the history and geology behind these oil accumulations in each region is sometimes very different.

As of 2001, the United States ranked 12th in oil reserves (21,500 million barrels) and 6th in natural gas reserves (173 trillion cubic feet)*. Leading the way in these respective categories is Saudi Arabia and the former Soviet Union.
