What's Oil Doing in Signal Hill, Long
Beach, California?

So, where would you drill to remove most of the oil? The answer is "high
on structure." In other words, at the top of the anticline.

Since oil is less dense than the rock around it, in many
cases it will rise to the surface once a hole is drilled (which used to
happen often, causing the classic "gusher"). As it turns out, gushers
are extremely dangerous, and are avoided by drillers at all cost.

This well has been drilled "high on structure". As a
result, it maximizes the amount of oil that will be taken out of
the ground. Note, however, that some of the oil still remains. Try
as we might, petroleum geologists and engineers are still unable
to recover ALL of the oil from a productive reservoir. Some of the
oil stays behind, trapped in the small crevaces and pore spaces
underground.
