| Late Devonian - 360 million years ago | ||
This extinction event occurred at the end of the Devonian period, roughly 360 million years ago. Estimates for the length of this extinction range from 500,000 to 15 million years; the commonly agreed upon length is 3 million years. |

| Cause: | The Late Devonian mass extinction likely had several causes, and was probably made up of several extinction events occurring close together in time. Some researchers have suggested that an asteroid impact and/or a global cooling event triggered the extinctions. |
|
| Result: | Marine animals were once again the group hardest-hit by this extinction. Approximately 57% of marine genera (and 75% of species) went extinct. Land plants were well-established in the Devonian, but they do not seem to have been severely affected. |
