Hyde Park Mastodon Research:
Mollusks

Polar bears live where it's cold. Tropical birds live in the tropics. Along these lines, did you know that there are clams that only live in cold water, and others that only live in very warm water? By looking at the sediments at the bottom of Lozier Pond in Hyde Park, scientists will try and unravel the temperature of the pond water (which should, in turn, tell us what the air temperature was) through time by looking at the different groups of clams and snails that lived together in the water, and comparing them to similar group's habitats today.
