Hyde Park Mastodon Research:
Sediment Isotopes

Scientists will be studying the history of Lozier Pond at Hyde Park. This will be done through an understanding of both biology and chemistry of the organic remains preserved at the bottom of the lake. As the climate changed from extreme cold (during the Ice Age, 18,000 years ago) to relative warmth of today, the chemistry of the atmosphere changed as well. Incredibly, a signal of this changing chemistry can sometimes be seen in preserved plants and snail shells, among other things.
